history of the Indonesian Coffee Exporters Association

On July 30, 1979, at the initiative of Mr. Osman Soedargo (PT. Palembang Jaya) and Mr. Karta Widjaja (PT Lakop), a number of coffee exporters held a meeting with the Director General of Foreign Trade, Dr. Suhadi Mangkusuwondo, to discuss the PET (Additional Export Tax) imposed on coffee exports. The PET levy was considered burdensome, and the exporters hoped that its implementation would be postponed for at least two months.
After discussing these issues, and considering that future coffee trade issues would undoubtedly need to be addressed with the government, Mr. Suhadi Mangkusuwondo suggested that exporters immediately form an association. This suggestion received a positive response, and on July 30th, the meeting agreed to establish the association. Indonesian Coffee Exporters Association (AEKI).

The coffee exporters who attended the meeting, who were also founding members of AEKI, were:

Oesman Soedargo(PT Palembang Jaya)
Karta Widjaja(PT Lakop)
HM Uding (deceased)(PT Bumi Asih)
Totong Kuswara(PT Pantja Niaga)
Arifin Astrawinata(PT Tjipta Niaga)
Handoko(PT Sungai Budi)
Nirwan Bakrie's Generous(PT Bakrie Brothers)
Kusnadi AS.(PT Bakrie Brothers)

After several meetings, the AEKI Central Executive Board was formed for the 1979-1982 period, with Mr. Nirwan Dermawan Bakrie as Chairman and Mr. Dharyono Kertosastro (Deceased) as Deputy Chairman. The establishment of AEKI was confirmed by Notary Soebagio Ronoatmodjo, SH in Deed No. 11 dated November 5, 1983.

Based on the Articles of Association (AD/ART) which were stipulated in the 1st General Meeting of Members (RUA) in 1982, the aims and objectives of AEKI are primarily as follows:

  • Improving the image of Indonesian coffee in the international market, in order to achieve the best position.
  • Directing and developing cooperation between members.
  • Integrating joint efforts with the government to support export development and increase foreign exchange earnings.
  • Trurt works together to improve the standard of living of coffee farmers.

Even though the Articles of Association/Bylaws are always improved in every RUA which takes place every 5 years, in principle the aims and objectives do not experience any significant changes.
In the 2000-2005 Articles of Association, for example, there are several additions to the objectives of AEKI, namely as follows:

  • Directing members to become professional exporters.
  • Helping to improve the knowledge and skills of coffee farmers.
